VITAMIN A (Retinol, Retinyl Palmitate)
Vitamin A is a powerhouse ingredient, renowned for its ability to repair DNA damage and restore normal cell function – the only ingredient proven to do so. It helps normalise and optimise not only stem cells (our “mother cells”) but also all other skin cells. Because Vitamin A works at such a deep level, the skin needs time to adjust. Receptors must become receptive, so introducing it slowly, starting with a low strength, is key.
Benefits of Vitamin A
Supports wound healing
Normalises sebum production
Improves blood flow, aiding nutrient delivery
Provides UV protection (UV rays deplete Vitamin A reserves)
Repairs DNA damage
Boosts collagen production, strengthening the skin
Speeds up cellular turnover
Rebalances pigment production
Why Cellular Turnover Matters
At age 20, cellular turnover takes about 28 days. By 40, it doubles – and slows further as we age. Vitamin A helps restore this process, which is why dryness, flaking, or mild peeling can occur when you first start using it. This is normal and improves as the skin adapts. Using too much Vitamin A too quickly, or starting with a strong formula, can overwhelm receptors and trigger a “retinoid response” (not an allergic reaction). To avoid this, start with a low strength 2 nights per week, and build up gradually until nightly use is possible.

Vitamin A & Skin Concerns
Acne / Breakouts
Vitamin A is my go-to for acne, provided the client has a strong skin barrier. By speeding up turnover, it brings congestion to the surface – known as purging – before the skin normalises.
Rosacea
A low-strength Vitamin A can help strengthen the skin and support capillaries. However, the barrier must be well-prepared before introducing it, and the process needs to be even slower. Always work with a practitioner who can assess when your skin is ready.
Anti-Ageing
Vitamin A boosts collagen production and quality, improving pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture.
PROLOGIC Step-Up Vitamin A Moisturisers
Prologic is my preferred Vitamin A range, using Retinyl Palmitate – UV stable, safe during pregnancy, and less irritating than other forms. Their “step-up” system lets us gradually increase strength with full barrier support.
Step 1: Response Vitamin A Moisturiser
Perfect for beginners. Helps transition into twice-daily use. Includes kiwi seed oil and echium oil for anti-inflammatory and barrier support.
Step 2: Strengthen Vitamin A Moisturiser
For those already using Vitamin A. Supports collagen with Vitamin C and kiwi seed oil, strengthens capillary networks, and fades pigmentation.
Step 3: Optimal Vitamin A Moisturiser
A high-strength option for those who have progressed through the Prologic range. Provides superior DNA repair and stimulates new collagen production.
